Galaxy Note 3: Previewing Expected Features (And Rumors)

Everyone has been buzzing lately about the soon-to-be released Galaxy Note 3. Samsung recently sent invites to a “Samsung Unpacked” event, where it is expected that the Galaxy Note 3 will be released. The event will take place in Berlin, but will be live-streamed for those of us not lucky enough to get an invitation.

Likely Features
The image above is supposedly a leaked photo of the new Galaxy Note 3. As you can see , the phone has an extremely slim bezel to make room for its huge screen, which is likley to be 5.7 inches (so .2 inches larger than the Galaxy Note 2).
Similar to how Samsung increased the screen size of the Galaxy S4 while decreasing the overall footprint of that phone, I expect Samsung to do the same thing with the Note 3. (The S4 measures 137 x 70 x 7.9 mm and weighs 130 g;  the S3 is slightly fatter, at 137 x 71×8.6 mm and 133 g). The screen of the GS4 was increased by .2 inches over the 4.8 -inch GS3. While doing that though, Samsung still managed to decrease the overall weight of the device. I expect Samsung to do the same thing for the new Note. Some users are already hesitant to buy a phone as big as the Galaxy Note. However, if Samsung manages to slim the new Note like it did for the GS4, then consumers will get the best of both worlds: a larger and lighter phone.
Flexible Screen?
There have been many rumors about the possibility of the new Note having a flexible screen and an all-metal body. I find both design aspects unlikely.

  • First, no company (as of yet) has been able to figure out how to incorporate a flexible screen into a cellphone. Flexible screens may be the way of the future, but I don’t think that the technology is there yet
  • Secondly, as much as I would like to see a premium all-metal chassis, I find this unlikely as wel

The design of the Galaxy Note has always reflected the design of its smaller cousin, the Galaxy S.

  • The Galaxy Note 2 sported an all-plastic body(just like the GS3)
  • The GS4 went a little more premium on the design, adding an aluminum bumper to give the phone a sturdier feel

I expect the Note will be a blown-up version of the same thing. You can see the similarity in the design of the Galaxy Note 2 and GS3 in the image below.

 Galaxy Note 3 Features?
Undoubtedly, the Galaxy Note 3 will be a powerhouse of a phone. It is rumored to sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. That would give the new phone the processing power to crush everyday tasks and games.
Not only that, but the Note will likely have a 13-megapixel camera, just like the GS4. The GS4 has been heavily praised for the advanced features its camera sports. I look forward to the same features being assimilated into the Note 3.
The S Pen
The S Pen, the Note’s claim to fame, will certainly remain with the device. It is difficult to imagine what additional features will be added to the already capable S Pen.

However, Samsung held a developers conference in San Franscisco to brainstorm new features for the S Pen.  Since Samsung will be slimming the design of the new Note, the pen will likely decrease in size, as well.
Since the Galaxy Note line is geared toward business-minded people, one useful feature that could be added to the S Pen is a snipping tool, similar to the one found pre-installed on all Windows 7 and 8 computers. This tool would allow users to use their S Pen to circle an area of the screen that they would like to have copied. That would be useful because unlike screenshots, a selective screen capture would keep the viewer’s eye only on necessary information (instead of all the information a screen shot would provide).
I look forward to the release of the Galaxy Note 3 with excitement. Most of its features are well known, but I bet Samsung still has a few tricks up its sleeve. The Note will make every day tasks easy by optimizing them on its HUGE screen. The Note 3 will be a awesome phone, and I cannot wait to buy one.
Would you buy the Galaxy Note 3? Is the screen size too large for you, or just right? Say what you think here
